Colorado Requires New Hire Reporting of Independent Contractors

Effective July 1, 2021, Colorado H.B. 1220 requires new hire reporting for independent contractors. For new hire reporting purposes, the term “employee” was amended to include individuals who are self-employed or contracted employees for whom the employer is required to report compensation to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Under existing law, all employers are required to report every employee working in Colorado to the Colorado State Directory of New Hires within 20 days of the date of hire.
