Louisiana Expands Timeline for Reporting Employee Separations

Effective August 1, 2025, Louisiana employers will have more time to report employee separations to the Louisiana Workforce Commission. Senate Bill 248 extends the reporting window from three (3) calendar days to 10 calendar days following an employee’s separation.

The revised timeline provides employers with additional flexibility when preparing and submitting separation notices. This change is intended to streamline reporting processes without disrupting the timely processing of unemployment claims.

Employers are still required to provide complete and accurate information when submitting separation details. Inaccurate or delayed reporting can lead to unemployment benefit overpayments or mismanaged claims and may result in penalties.

Next Steps for Employers

Employers should review and update internal offboarding procedures to reflect the new 10-day reporting window. Human resources and payroll staff responsible for submitting separation information should be trained on the revised requirement to ensure consistent compliance. Employers who use third-party administrators for unemployment claims management should confirm that their vendors are aware of the new timeline and have adjusted their processes accordingly.
