Minnesota Amends Jury Duty Law to Provide Additional Worker Protections

Minnesota has strengthened its juror protection laws to better safeguard employee rights by providing more comprehensive protection for employees fulfilling their civic duty.

Effective July 1, 2024, Minnesota employers must allow employees to attend court for jury service without requiring them to work alternative shifts. Employers are prohibited from taking adverse employment actions against employees who receive or respond to a jury summons, serve as jurors, or attend court for potential jury service. Previously, the law only protected employees from termination for jury-related activities.

Next Steps

Employers who do not currently have a jury duty policy should implement a policy that addresses pay, benefits, and job protection. Employers with an existing jury duty policy should review the policy to determine if updates are needed, particularly if the policy includes language regarding scheduling or making up work for time spent on juror service.
