Reminder: Massachusetts Employees May Take Paid Family and Medical Leave for Family Member’s Serious Health Condition

Massachusetts provides paid family and medical leave (PFML) to qualified current employees, former employees and self-employed individuals. On January 1, 2021 covered individual began to be eligible to take leave for qualifying reasons including:

  • Bonding with a newborn child, newly adopted child or newly placed foster child;
  • A qualifying exigency related to a family member’s active duty or impending call or order to active duty in the Armed Forces;
  • Caring for a family member who is a covered servicemember; and
  • The covered individual’s own serious health condition.

Beginning July 1, 2021, PFML will also be available to be taken by a covered individual to care for a family member with a serious health condition.
