Massachusetts provides paid family and medical leave (PFML) to qualified current employees, former employees and self-employed individuals. On January 1, 2021 covered individual began to be eligible to take leave for qualifying reasons including:
- Bonding with a newborn child, newly adopted child or newly placed foster child;
- A qualifying exigency related to a family member’s active duty or impending call or order to active duty in the Armed Forces;
- Caring for a family member who is a covered servicemember; and
- The covered individual’s own serious health condition.
Beginning July 1, 2021, PFML will also be available to be taken by a covered individual to care for a family member with a serious health condition.
