Vermont Employers Will Soon Be Able to Opt-In to Paid Leave

Beginning on February 15, 2024, Vermont employers with at least two employees have the opportunity to purchase FMLI benefit plans with employees being eligible to collect benefits starting on July 1, 2024. The FMLI program is entirely voluntary for private employers. Below is a recap of the program.

What is FMLI?

FMLI is a state-sponsored program that provides wage replacement benefits to eligible employees taking leave for:

  • Bonding with a new child (birth, adoption or foster care placement);
  • Caring for a seriously ill family member;
  • Taking medical leave for a serious illness or injury; or
  • Any qualifying exigency arising out of the fact that the employee’s spouse, child, or parent is a covered military member on “covered active duty,” or to care for a covered servicemember with a serious injury or illness.

How can I offer FMLI to my employees?

Employers who choose to participate will work with The Hartford, the program’s designated insurance carrier, to:

  • Select a plan design
  • Determine contribution structure
  • Enroll employees

Benefits of offering FMLI

  • Offering paid leave can be a competitive advantage in attracting and retaining skilled workers.
  • Providing paid leave demonstrates your commitment to employee well-being, potentially leading to increased morale and loyalty.
  • Paid leave can help employees manage personal challenges without financial hardship, potentially leading to reduced stress and improved productivity upon their return.

For specific details, program updates, and enrollment information, employers may visit the official FMLI website at https://fmli.thehartford.com/ or contact The Hartford directly.

Next Steps

Employers should carefully evaluate the potential costs associated with offering FMLI and consider the benefits it may bring to their organization and employees. For those who choose to offer the benefit, ensure that you communicate FMLI options and eligibility to your employees.
