Washington Expands Paid Sick Leave

Effective July 27, 2025, Washington amended its paid sick leave law, expanding leave to those that work for transportation networks to use leave to prepare for or participate in any judicial or administrative immigration proceeding involving themselves or a family member.

For context, Washington law defines a transportation network company as a corporation, partnership, sole proprietorship, or other entity that operates in this state, and uses a digital network to connect passengers with transportation network company drivers to provide prearranged rides.

Acceptable documentation to verify use of leave form this reason can be provided by advocates, attorneys, or a personal statement, provided it excludes any personally identifiable immigration information.

Next Steps for Employers

Covered employers should review and update their policies and procedures to reflect the new reasons for leave. Employers should also provide training for all human resource personnel and managers/supervisors who manage leave requests. This training should cover the available leave options under the updated law.
